Dimensions:

Media:
Acrylic on plastic, lights, props
Description:
This installation addresses issues of representation through "the screen" of language, art, and culture. It consists of a large, painted, backlit sheet of plastic. On one side are crudely constructed wooden props, lit so they cast shadows on the screen. From the other side, the screen appears to be a cross between a movie screen and a huge illuminated manuscript; benches are provided for viewers to sit and watch. Text in a foreign alphabet covers the screen surface, and the shadows move in and out of focus as the screen gently moves, creating subtle and mysterious images. At times it is almost possible to recognize an object from its shadow before it moves out of focus. The apparatus in back of the screen is visible from a separate vantage point.
