Description:
Homesĭtē is a collaborative art installation by Joyce Dallal and Lauren M. Kasmer. It is a public participatory piece exploring ideas of home in relation to the city of Los Angeles. The artists have created varied components to consider the city's historical, physical, and cultural landscape. These modular components can be rearranged to fit in different spaces depending on the site. The installation includes a video portion, three house-like display cabinets, and other elements referencing the native environment and history.
The piece provides a framework for residents of the city to add their own perspective as well by contributing stories, statements, visual items, and small tableaus. A freestanding "drop off box" provides a way for people to immediately respond. Contributions have ranged from a contemporary Gabrielino's account of reclaiming a sacred site in West Los Angeles to a small tableau from a recent Korean "transplant" which visually explores her lack of connection with Los Angeles. Contributions such as these are incorporated into the piece on an ongoing basis during each exhibition. Homesite was originally funded by a Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Grant and has been exhibited at such diverse venues as a shopping mall, a cafe, a theater, and a public gallery. It is a continuing project to create a changing collective statement about the city.
