Three Words, 2001
Temporary installation on the front of the former Fairfax Branch Library and printed bookmarks, Los Angeles, CA.
Dimensions:
Entire library facade
Media:
Fabric, pinwheels, kite, vinyl lettering, printed bookmarks
Description:
This installation was part of Six Degrees: Art in the Libraries, a citywide event presented by Side Street Projects, Los Angeles. Using temporary materials such as fabric, vinyl lettering, pinwheels, and a kite, I inscribed three words on the front of the library, each written in a way that made them difficult to read. In order to understand them, the viewer had to work at decoding, much like a beginning reader. Three different bookmarks were distributed to library patrons to accompany the installation. The bookmarks acted as clues to help figure out the words. My intention was to examine issues of perception, communication, and understanding as they relate to language. (The three words are decipher, reflect, soar.)
