Description:
This is an ongoing project that grows out of the way reading the morning paper makes me feel so powerless, and so distraught and sick with conflicting emotions that I donft know what to do. What I usually end up doing is saving the paper, so that I now have stacks of Los Angeles Times front pages going back several years. I started to create small still-lives with these papers that I photograph. These images have acted as sketches that have taken me in several directions. One direction that has emerged is to cover the images with hand-drawn marks that attempt to express the emotions the articles evoke in me, another has been to create digital collages with elements cut from these still-lives combined with other imagery (as in the History and Flowers series), and the most recent has been to recreate the newspaper stil-life elements at a large scale. This was the inspiration for the sculptural piece titled Media Storm (2005), where I printed a digital collage of newspaper articles about the Iraq war onto rice paper and formed it into a twenty-foot high tornado.
